THE ESTHETICS OF DENTURES

Natural beauty is important to everyone. Having a pleasant smile is no less important to the denture wearer than to any other patient. Dentures can be esthetically pleasing if attention is given to several factors:

1) Color of teeth - The shade for a patient's denture teeth should be selected to blend with the patient's skin and hair color. A tooth that is too dark makes the patient look older, while too light a color looks artificial. The right color will enhance the patient's facial features.

2) Size and shape of teeth - The tooth size should also be compatible with the patient's face. A large tooth will look false, while too small a tooth will project an unhealthy appearance. Just like the color, the proper size will blend and enhance the patient's face.

3) Position of teeth - Regardless of the teeth selected, they will not appear pleasing if they are placed incorrectly. When smiling, it's most pleasing if there is a slight curve formed by the upper teeth, roughly paralleling the curve of the lower lip. If this "smile line" is flattened or reversed, the denture wearer appears older and unhappy.

4) Vertical opening - The amount that the patient's jaw is open when the teeth touch is critical to the appearance. If this "vertical dimension" is too small, the chin and nose will be too close together, making the patient appear much older. If the dimension is too large, the face will appear too full (the wearer may also have problems with speech and eating). The proper dimension will enhance not only the smile, but the entire face

Proper attention to detail when constructing dentures is important for both form and function of the final prosthesis. A denture can be a cosmetically pleasing restoration.
