THE EDENTULOUS DILEMMA

The dental profession today has been led to believe that complete tooth loss is no longer a significant problem. We believe that modern techniques and dental education have made it possible for virtually all patients to keep their teeth for a lifetime.

While modern dentistry has decreased tooth loss, advances in medicine are allowing people to live longer. This impacts the denture wearing population in 2 ways: 1) As people age, more teeth are lost due to a number of reasons (reduced hygiene ability, altered oral condition due to medications and overall health, etc), and 2) Current denture wearers will require continued treatment for a longer period of time.

In North America, the 65 and older age category is the fastest growing age group. This group should double in size by the year 2030.

There are currently 32 million edentulous people in the United States. Of those wearing dentures, 75% of them are wearing dentures which are older than clinical recommendations. Approximately 12 million new dentures are made annually.

As the population ages, their denture fabrication becomes more demanding. A patient who once had robust ridges and well-coordinated muscles may, in his/her later years, have flat or negative ridges, dry mouth, retracted tongue, and loss of muscle tone and coordination. A patient who could wear an average, three appointment denture in his/her youth, will likely require more individualized attention in his/her later years.

There is still a large number of patients requiring denture services, and this number will not significantly drop in the immediate future. These patients deserve our best, and we should provide our best to supply these patients with proper function, esthetics, and above all, restore and maintain their dignity.
